Detected ... lists[edit]

What's the purpose of the "Detected ..." lists – or more exactly: what's the problem with the categories linked there? I can see how those with red links could likely be problem cases. But what seems to be wrong with the blue links? I see that some of these apparently have been found in no page at all - how can this be? And what on earth do the black non-links do there - how can something be linked and not appear as link? Lastly, how do I know which of these have been checked for false positives? (Maybe a list for correct positives would be in order.) — Sebastian (talk) 22:09, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

I added some explanation and instructions to the project page. Hopefully that answers your questions. Thanks for asking; a lot of people wandering by here were probably wondering those things. -- Beland 05:25, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Help?[edit]

I've been trying to clean up some of the categories listed on the project page. But I and others have run into a problem at Category:Agriculture. Pollinator is on a revert campaign. Maurreen 06:11, 26 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have created Category:Kollam templates for adding the Templates related with the city of Kollam and Kollam district in India. But now I found that some of the other pages are also there in the category. I would like to keep this category as an exclusive category of "Kollam Templates". I tried many times to remove those articles, but failed. Can anybody help me in this?? Arun 08:47, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Character problems?[edit]

Is this still a problem: These can't be fixed until non-ASCII characters can appear in category names? I've checked a few of them, and the categories seem to be holding up just fine with non-ascii characters. --Kbdank71 17:15, 27 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct..certainly since MediaWiki 1.5 went live, we have full Unicode support. Thanks! -- Beland 00:39, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Difference?[edit]

Is there any meaningful difference between the two last sections of the project page ('Articles in category "Wikipedia categories in need of attention"' and 'Subcategories')? Apparently, categories can be tagged and added with either a template or a category. Should we settle on one and get the other deleted? Maurreen (talk) 02:52, 2 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's actually that category talk pages end up under "Articles", categories tagged directly end up under "Subcategories". I usually add the tag to the talk page, so I can write a note as to exactly what needs cleanup. Usually this breaks down to "This is a mess" or "Too many articles". The benefits of adding the tag to the category page itself include greater visibility and reader awareness. Personally, I find no pressing need to enforce consistency, but if someone else wants to, that's fine with me. -- Beland 00:38, 9 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

badly named categories which are linked from several places[edit]

Can I rely on the listed 'linked from' articles as being exaustive? I am comparing

in particluar. The first says 'etc.' - so I asssume I'll have to check every article in Category:Alumni of the École Polytechnique to make sure that none of them are abusing URL encoding. Category:São Paulo state is only lised as being badly linked to from one article - do I just have to check Embu, or every one of the 200+ articles in the category? Slashes in Categories - question[edit]

Many of the categories with slases definitely need cleanup, but some, like Srem/Srijem seem appropriate. In this case, these are references to the same place in the 2 prevalent languages of the area, and other constructions would be awkward. Is this still an issue, it seems to work fine. Alma mater categories[edit]

I went through and cleaned house, putting a CfD on all the empty categories (see the log). Semiconscious · talk 01:10, 12 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Question: nationalities: English vs. British[edit]

(reposted from Categories needed): For some categories of people by nationality (for example, Category:Economists by nationality), there exist categories for both British and English fill-in-the-blanks. This seems odd to me; if someone is British but not English, wouldn't there be other subcategories of British in which to file them? Should British just be a holding category for subcategories, or what? And should both the British and English categories be under Fill-in-the-blanks by nationality, or just British?--ragesoss 05:06, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The best place to ast is probably Categories for Deletion, since they deal with that sort fo thing a lot. As far as I can tell, it's done on a fairly ad-hoc basis at the moment. SeventyThree(Talk) 14:59, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page split[edit]

At the moment, this page is trying to do two things at once - be a category, and be a list of bad title found through database scans. I propose we split the database scan part to a different page (e.g. Wikipedia:Bad category names, to match the entry on {{Active Wiki Fixup Projects}}). That will leave this page as a category for pages with the {{cleancat}} tag. It also makes the new page more suitable for {{Active Wiki Fixup Projects}}, which is for projects which are "systematic (e.g. problems are found using software, not by humans)". Any objections/suggestions? SeventyThree(Talk) 01:05, 7 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I'm going to go ahead and do this now. SeventyThree(Talk) 23:03, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Enquiry. "Indigenous, First Nations, or Aboriginal Canadians?[edit]

I have found three categories that appear to me to be duplication and/or overlapping. I wouldn't know what is the correct term, Anybody any idea whether the following should be joined, merged, or even left alone? I'm sure there's more... Probably Native if I looked further.

  • Category:Aboriginal peoples in Canadian Territories
  • Category:First Nations in the Northwest Territories
  • Category:Indigenous peoples of North America

Self-reference[edit]

I may be missing something - but doesn't this category self-refer? Was this intended? Does it need attention?? Thanks, Ian Cairns 13:39, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
