Chameli Devi Jain
Chameli Devi Jain (1928–1983) was an Indian freedom fighter, journalist, and an advocate for women's rights. She played a significant role in the Indian independence movement and later became one of India's pioneering women journalists.[1][2][3]
Early life[edit]
She was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, She was deeply influenced by the struggle for Indian independence.[4]
Career[edit]
She joined the freedom movement at a young age and actively participated in various protests and campaigns against British colonial rule.
After India gained independence, She turned her attention to journalism. She started her career as a reporter for the Hindustan Times, one of India's leading newspapers. She later went on to become the editor of the women's magazine, Femina.
She was known for her fearless reporting and her commitment to social justice. She covered a wide range of issues, including women's rights, poverty, and political corruption. Her journalism was marked by its integrity, compassion, and dedication to the truth.[5]
In recognition of her contributions to journalism and women's empowerment, She was awarded the Padma Bhushan, in 1982.
Legacy[edit]
Her legacy continues through the Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Woman Mediaperson, which honors women journalists who exhibit social concern, dedication, courage, and compassion in their work. The award, established by The Media Foundation in 1980, celebrates the contributions of women in journalism, particularly those from rural areas or working in regional Indian languages.[6]
