Coryell City is an unincorporated community in Coryell County, in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 125 in 2000. It is located within the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metropolitan area.

History[edit]

When Coryell County was organized in 1854, this community was first named Rainey's Creek. A post office was established at Rainey's Creek in 1857 and remained in operation until 1958. The community received its mail from Gatesville and Valley Mills. Seventy families lived here by 1860. The name was changed to Coryell within the next decade. In the 1880s, the community had 200 residents served by a church and two steam-powered cotton gins. Farmers who lived in the area shipped cotton, wool, and grain. It grew during the early 1900s, but then declined at the end of the 1930s. The population zenith was reported as 406 in 1939, a number which plunged to 150 in 1943. It rose slightly to 175 in the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s, then declined to 125 from 1968 through 2000.[2] The population further decreased to 70 in 2010.[3]
