The 2001–2002 Amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship was a rugby union competition for Scotland's amateur district teams.
This was the third season of the re-instated amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship. This was played in the professional era, but was intended as a stepping stone for amateurs to the professional game in Scotland.
The following season, the Scottish Inter-District Championship once again ran with professional sides; as the SRU re-convened the Border Reivers side. Along with Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby they fought out the sponsorship named Bank of Scotland Pro Cup.
An amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship was not then played again till the 2022-23 season, when it was again returned by the SRU, to help selection for the Scotland Club XV side.
The Caledonia -Borders match was postponed due to frost but later played, result shown below.[1] However all matches were played.[2][3][4][5]
The Glasgow Herald correctly called the two districts that would be fighting out the Inter-District Championship; the Borders and Glasgow District. The Borders as they would be buoyed by the reformation of the Border Reivers side; and Glasgow District as the side had a number of - at the time, potential (which was realised for some) - professional players in their ranks.[6]
the Borders have the extra incentive of knowing a new professional team will be set-up in their district next season, the Ayrshire native - who may find himself closer to home than expected today if weather conditions force a switch from Dalziel to Ayr or Ardrossan - is one of several elsewhere with good reason to be very motivated.
This Glasgow squad in particular contains a string of potential professionals, Sinclair's Hawks team-mates Duffy, Richard Maxton, Rory McKay, and Chris Docherty among them as well as West's Ross Lothian, his Scotland sevens squad colleague who crucially claimed two tries on Thursday.
This was the last amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship for many years. With the return of the Border Reivers, a professional Inter-District Championship was played the following season, but this was then abandoned in favour of the Celtic League.
The Scottish Rugby Union decided to re-instate the amateur Scottish Inter-District Championship in 2022-23 season. They stated:[7]
The move to bring back the historic competition was made following an amended motion presented by GHA at the Scottish Rugby AGM in July 2021, where 72 clubs to 46 voted in favour to revive the tournament.
The competition, which was first established in 1953, used to be competed for annually in the amateur era by Edinburgh, Glasgow, the South, the North and Midlands and, laterally, the Scottish Exiles.
The Inter-district Championship continued to be played at the amateur level until 2002 with players selected to represent Glasgow, Caledonia, Edinburgh and the Scottish Exiles.
