Abdullah bin Zayd also known as Abdullah bin Zaid bin Tha‘labah or Abdullah Bin Zaid Ansari or Abu Muhammad was a companion of the prophet Muhammad. He is honored with the title of the Companion of the Adhan. He was part of the Khazraj tribe and was proficient in the writing of Arabic prior to his acceptance of Islam, a rare skill during this time. He is a notable companion given that the call to prayer was revealed to him in a dream.[1] He was also the one who carried the flag of the Sons of Harith of the tribe of Khazraj when the Muslims conquered Mecca.[2]

Revelation of the Call to Prayer[edit]

Abdullah bin Zayd dreamed about the call to prayer during the first year of the Hijrah. Following the completion of the building of the Masjid Al-Nabawi or the Prophet's Mosque, there was a debate among the Muslims about how people should be notified of the time of prayer. Some suggested the blowing of a horn, but the Prophet disapproved of this as this was already being used by the Jews of Madina, some suggested a bell, but the Prophet also disagreed as this was how the Christians signaled it was time for their mass.[1] So Abdullah bin Zaid narrates that he came to the Prophet and said he saw a man wearing two green garments in a dream who was holding a bell in his hand. He asked him, “O servant of God! Are you going to sell this?” The person replied, “What are you going to do with it?” he said, “We will use it to call people towards prayer.” He replied, “Shall I tell you of something that is better than this?” I said, “why not!” Hazrat Abdullah says that he then repeated the words of the Adhan (Call to prayer).[1]

The Prophet replied: ‘If Allah wills, this is a true dream. Stand with Bilal and tell him what you saw, so that he may call the Adhan according to those words, as his voice is louder than yours.’ Hence, I stood with Bilal and continued to tell him the words and he continued to call the Adhan accordingly.” This dream was confirmed when Umar bin Al-Khattab came and said I heard these same words in my dream after hearing the call to prayer.

Death[edit]

Abdullah bin Zayd died in the 32nd year of the Hijrah during the reign of the Uthman at the age of 64.[2][3]
