Advena Proprietary Limited (/ædvnɑː/) is an Australian software company and private intelligence agency that develops cybersecurity products, intelligence services, and other products[3][1] for consumers, businesses, and governments. Advena's global headquarters are in Sydney, Australia.[1]

History[edit]

Bradley Hodges founded Advena in February 2016. He bootstrapped the company for several years, financing the startup with a $3,000 credit card debt.

The name is a derivative of the Latin word advena, meaning 'newcomer', a deliberate reflection of the company's entry into the well-established and complex cybersecurity and technology sector. The company's logo reflects this close alignment to technology where a 53-degree triangular angle was chosen to symbolically represent the company's name in binary code, which is 53 characters long.[4]

In August 2020, Advena was incorporated as a Proprietary Limited Company.[5] In the same month, the company revealed details about it's intelligence relationship with the Australian Government, sharing details about its presence in the Australian Cyber Security Centre[6], sharing that the company would "[contribute] measurement and signature intelligence, [collaborate] with industry partners on key cyber security issues, and [provide] assistance in operations of interest to national security objectives".

In January 2021, during the 2021 Quarter 3 shareholders' meeting, Advena announced it would be restructuring to position its signals intelligence, counterintelligence, and security clearance vetting services as primary business activities to "support the Australian, and United States Federal Governments in keeping people safe".

In August 2023, Advena announced in it's 2023 Annual Report that it had been successful in securing over A$600,000 in pre-seed fundraising and other benefits.[1] The company also published that Keyport, a password manager and privacy platform developed by Advena[2], would become it's first consumer product.[1]

Products[edit]

The company operates a security clearance vetting platform branded as Apera.[8][9] The platform targets corporate and government customers, specializing in candidate screening and employee monitoring through background checks and intelligence-gathering.[8]

Cyber Threat Intelligence[edit]

Advena maintains a cyber threat intelligence, foreign and domestic security intelligence, and cyber combat reconnaissance relationship with the Australian Government.[6][10][11][12] The scope of the information which the company handles, and specific agencies which Advena shares information with is not publicly available.
