DeCarlo started his academic career as a part-time faculty in the graduate Social Work program at Wayne State University. Later, he was appointed by the Chicago State University to serve as a tenured graduate associate professor of psychology. DeCarlo is a visiting professor scholar at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and Cape Coast University in Cape Coast, Africa, where he conducted doctoral seminars in psychology and psychiatry.[citation needed] He has been a lecturer of graduate courses in social work at The Brown School at Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. His career in the academic field has spanned more than 20 years now, and he has held numerous positions, including tenured faculty member, international scholar, division chair, associate provost of academic affairs, vice-chancellor of academic affairs, and director of graduate and professional programs at various universities. DeCarlo also serves as an adviser providing senior academic leadership search consultation for colleges and universities throughout the United States.[citation needed]
