Anyama Town located in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It serves as the headquarters for Anyama Clan, one of the four clans that make up Ogbia Kingdom. There are two towns or communities named Anyama in Bayelsa State. One is located in Ogbia Local Government called Anyama-Ogbia, while the other is located in Southern Ijaw Local Government, called Anyama-Ijaw. Both Anyama communities belong to the Ijaw tribe. One speaks the Ogbia Language and the other speaks central Ijaw. This article is focused on Anyama-Ogbia.
History[edit]
Anyama town in Ogbia was founded in 1655[1] by Addïh[2] (pronounced Adeh or Ad-deh), a wealthy migrant trader and fisher man who first settled in what is now known today as Anyama town. It was first called otu-Egbesu meaning 'home of Egbesu'. The Ijaw diety of Igbesu or Egbesu is the traditional deity of Anyama Town and the royal family of Anyama.
As time progressed, Anyama Town became a fast growing fishing and trading settlement for travelers, engaging in palm oil trading,[3] fish trading, and trading in sea foods, with Addih becoming the first community chief or traditional ruler of Anyama Town, thus starting the Obi-Adeh Royal Family, the royal family of Anyama Town and owners of Anyama Town.
Anyama Community, under Addih thrived, trading in sea foods, palm oil,[4] cassava, yam, cocoyam, rice,[5] vegetables, meat, other farm produce and still trade in them till date. They traded with other Ijaw communities and travelers from other tribes including Europeans. They also briefly dabbled into slave trade. The Ijaws were known to have engaged in slave trade,[6] buying Ibo (Igbo) slaves from the Onitsha route and Anyama was no exception, though this practice was short-lived in Anyama community. Addih gave birth to his son Ekporh, and Ekporh gave birth to his son Obi.[7]
As Obenema (community chief or traditional ruler) of Anyama Town, Ekporh expanded trade to the east, using sea routes. Ekporh named his son Obi after a dear friend he met from one of his trading journeys to the east. Members of the community say that Ekporh lived to be around 138 years old, making him the longest living person ever in Anyama Community, earning him the title (dume-dume-nekpala - meaning a person that continuously adds a year to his life).
He lived to see his children, grand children, great-grand children. His children and grand children all lived long lives. It is said that he died after members of the community, conspired and put him in an ant hill, saying that he was old and had lived too long. Before his final breath, he placed a curse on the community that no one will ever grow old to reach his age or come close.
Ekporh son, Obi, gave birth to sons, Samuel Okori Obi, Stanley Obi and Julius Obi. The names Okori and Obi in Anyama-Ogbia[8] means, to be settled in favor and a kings house respectively.
These sons would eventually produce royal houses, further generations of the Obi-Adeh Royal family, like the House of Ekporh, House of Okori, House of Jokori, House of Adeh, House of Obi and more. As Obenema, Obi was fondly called (obi-te-ekporh, meaning Obi, son of Ekproh). After Obi's reign as Obenema, Samuel Okori Obi led Anyama Town into more prosperous era, gaining wealth and increasing the trade routes of the community beyond the region. His Royal Highness, Samuel Okori Obi, bore the titles (ekporh-namobi-ozo (I), meaning someone coming from the house of kings) and (odidia-marakwe (I), meaning the pillar of the family or an indestructible pillar or rope). He was nicknamed money man due to the wealth he amassed over time.
Members of the Obi-Adeh royal family have relatives in several communities in Nembe and Brass and within communities in the Anyama Clan. Some members of the royal family like HRH Chief (Engr) Okori Obana Christopher, [ekporh-namobi-ozo (II)], a prince of Anyama Town, from the Royal House of Okori, who emerged as obenema of Epebu Community under the House of Apiri in Epebu. Others have emerged community chiefs of some of the other communities within the clan.
Economy[edit]
Anyama community still carries on trading in seafoods[9] (fish, prawns, crab etc), palmoil[10] and farm produce.
Environmental Issues[edit]
Anyama Town is faced with several environmental issues including flooding,[11] erosion and gas flaring. These issues affect not just Anyama Community but several other communities within the Anyama clan.
Building and other infrastructure has been washed away. Coastal erosion is a huge problem.[12] The erosion has brought about untold hardship. Over 500 houses have been washed away over the years. A new settlement was formed because the old original Anyama has almost been eroded away. People have moved out to other places because of fear of coastal erosion.[13]
The erosion has washed away houses,[14] economic trees and vital government establishments earlier cited in Anyama-Ogbia. Pubic property lost to the coastal erosion includes a government courtyard established around 1935, St. James Anglican Church established around 1910, two rice mills[15] established around 1977[16] a primary school,[17] three jetties, the general post office established around 1935 and a police station, while an old oil mill established around 1955 is on the verge been washed away.[18]
