Introduced in March 2022 by Yuga Labs, ApeCoin ($APE) is a cryptocurrency linked with the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) ecosystem, an NFT collection featuring 10,000 unique cartoon apes. The cryptocurrency functions as both a utility and governance token within this ecosystem. On its launch day, March 17, 2022, owners of Bored Apes, Mutant Apes, and Bored Ape Kennels could claim varying amounts of $APE based on specific criteria, with 15% of the token's maximum supply reserved for these NFT owners. The rest of the supply was shared to the ApeCoin DAO Treasury, Yuga Labs, BAYC Founders, the Jane Goodall Ape Foundation, and launch contributors.[1]
Operating as an ERC-20 token, ApeCoin is built on the Ethereum blockchain, ensuring compatibility with other Ethereum-based projects.[2] ApeCoin DAO uses ApeCoin for its decentralized governance framework in deciding how to use Ecosystem funds.[2] It has also been used as an in-game currency for games launched by Yuga Labs such as Dookey Dash[3], HV-MTL The Forge, and the upcoming metaverse game Otherside.
