The doumbek

Rock music made its mark in the United States during the 1940, and thanks to globalization, it spread like wildfire across the globe, including the Arab world. Arab Rock started to take shape as early as the 1940s and 1950s, but it truly blossomed in the early 2000s.

Musical elements[edit]

[1]In Arab rock music, you'll find a variety of instruments being used. Some of them include the oud, doumbek, and hand claps. The oud is particularly interesting as it's played with a unique fingerpicking technique and can create beautiful pitch bends.

When it comes to the melody, it's all about those musical phrases that have different intervals and most these phrases tend to follow a smoothy and connected melodic shape. It's like a musical journey filled with harmonious ups and downs.

In the percussion section, they use a rhythmic pattern called a "wazn". It adds a unique flavor to the music. Sometimes, they even play around with irregular time signatures like 5/8 or 7/8. But for example, in the song "Beat the Drum", they stick to the more common 4/4-time signature. It's all about finding that perfect beat to get everyone grooving!
