During his childhood, Joseph joined a choir[6], but his vocal talent was fully discovered when he was 15 years old by a singing teacher named Julia Kinsel[7], to whom his first book is dedicated (The Sound of the Soul: Discovering the Power of Your Voice, 1996)[8].

Joseph started working on his Vocal Awareness method in the 1960s. He often recounts surviving on food stamps with his wife by that time.[citation needed]
