The open's team event at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, will take place at the Paris Aquatics Centre on 5, 6 and 7 August 2024.[1] It will be the 8th time the team event is held at the Olympic Games. Also it will have significant changes to reinforce gender equality such as the composition of eight-member teams, and for the first time in the event, the inclusion of maximum two male competitors in a team. [2]

Competition format[edit]

Only one round of competition is held. Each team will perform a technical routine, a free routine and an acrobatic routine. The scores from the three routines are added together to decide the overall winners. All three routines starting lists are decided according to the World Ranking. First the non-ranked teams will be randomly drawn into the starting list and then the ranked teams will follow, going from the lower ranked competitors to the highest ranked competitors.[3] The technical routine must be completed in between 2 minutes 45 seconds and 2 minutes 55 seconds. There are 2 panels of 5 judges for each routine. In the technical routine, one panel each considers artistic impression and elements. The artistic impression judges each give three scores: choreography and musicality, performance and transitions; while the elements judges give a score for each element. Scores are between 0 and 10, with 0.25 point increments. The highest and lowest score from each panel (including within each element, for the elements panel) are discarded. The remaining scores are added in each panel. Finally, both panels scores are added and any penalties are substraed for giving the final technical score. The routine must contain three hybrid moves (one of which must include a Cadence action) and one acrobatic movement performed by all all the team members. It must also contain one circle pattern. Also there are 5 required elements which may be done in any order:[3][4]

  1. Difficulty 2.5: From a Submerged Back Pike position. A thrust to Vertical, then maintaining height while a leg is lowered to Fishtail Position. Return to Vertical position. Ending with a rapid 180º spin.[A]
  2. Difficulty 2.6: Starting in Vertical position. One full twist as one leg is lowered to a Bent Knee Vertical position. Another full twist while transitioning to Vertical position. Half twist as legs lowered into Split position. Walkout Front to finish.[B]
  3. Difficulty 2.6: From a Fishtail position. 2 Fouetté rotations. Transition into Vertical position. Finally a 720º continuous spin.[C]
  4. Difficulty 2.9: Staring in Front Pike position. Leg is lifted to Fishtail position. 180º arc transition to Split position. 180º hip rotation as leg is lifted to Fishtail position again. 180º rotation as leg transitions to Vertical position. Then a a Bent Knee Surface Arch position. Bent knee extends to a Surface Arch position. Lastly Arch to Back Layout Finish Action.
  5. Difficulty 2.4: From a Submerged Back Pike position. A thrust to vertical. Maintaining height legs split to Airborne Split position. Rapid 180º rotation. Bent Knee Vertical position. Rapid vertical descent as the bent knee extends. Ending with another vertical descent.[D]

The free routine time limits are 3 minutes 25 seconds to 3 minutes 35 seconds. There is no restriction on the routine. The 2 panels for the free routine are the same as the technical ones. Likewise judges qualify in the same way. Therefore, the highest and lowest score from each panel are discarded, with the remaining scores being added. Finally, both panels scores are added and any penalties are substraed for giving the final free routine score.[3]

The acrobatic routine time limits are 2 minutes 55 second to 3 minutes 5 seconds. 7 acrobatic movements must be done having at least one from each acrobatic group (airborne, balance, combined, platform). The same judgement system of both technical and free routines is also used.[5][6]

Technical Routine Variations[edit]

  1. ^ A 2.3 difficulty variation may be executed by ending with a vertical descent instead of a 180º spin.
  2. ^ A 2.3 difficulty variation may be executed by doing two half twists instead of the two full twist and eliminating the last half twist.
  3. ^ A 2.3 difficulty variation may be executed by doing a rapid 360º spin instead of a 720º continuous spin.
  4. ^ A 2.1 difficulty variation may be executed without the 180º rotation.

Qualification[edit]

A total of 10 teams qualify for the event. Each continent receive one dedicated team place given to the highest placed NOC in each of the five Continental Championships: Africa and Oceania internally determined their selections while the 2022 Asian Games and the 2023 Pan American Games served as qualifiers for Asia and the Americas. The Europe spot was guaranteed to the Olympic host, France. The final 5 places will be given to the 5 highest ranked not yet qualified teams at the 2024 World Aquatic Championships.[7]
