Avant Joik is a musical ensemble formed by the collaborative efforts of Maja S. K. Ratkje, Katarina Barruk, and Matti Aikio. The trio brings together diverse artistic backgrounds, blending Ratkje's avant-garde sensibilities, Barruk's Sámi yoik tradition, and Aikio's expertise in video works and Sámi activism. Avant Joik's music transcends genres, offering a unique fusion of experimental soundscapes and traditional Sámi vocal techniques. The group's innovative approach has generated attention for pushing boundaries and redefining the possibilities of cultural expression in contemporary music.
The ensemble was formed in 2018 and they performed for the first time at Sónar Festival in Barcelona in June the same year as a co-production with Insomnia Festival, Tromsø. Later on the group has also performed at Ultima (Oslo), Bergen Kunsthall, Radar (Århus), Artefact (Leuven), CTM (Berlin) and many other international venues and festivals.
