Better Finance – The European Federation of Investors and Financial Services Users (BETTER FINANCE) is a European non-governmental umbrella organization for associations of investors and users of financial services that conducts research and advocacy on financial regulation. Based in Brussels, the organization focuses on financial regulation in the European Union[1] as a counterbalance to the financial lobby.

History[edit]

Better Finance was founded in 2009 under the name EuroInvestors to give users of financial services a voice in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. Predecessor organisations were Euroshareholders, an association of small shareholders across Europe founded in Brussels in 1992, and FAIDER, a French association of independent pension savers. Euroshareholders joined EuroInvestors in 2012.

Due to the wide range of activities of its members, the name of the association was changed to EuroFinuse – the European Federation of Financial Services Users in 2012. The name is now Better Finance – The European Federation of Investors and Financial Services Users, which operates as an international and non-profit organisation under Belgian law (AISBL).

In principle, Better Finance campaigns for market integrity and is committed to improving financial supervision. Better Finance is currently campaigning for compensation for the shareholders of Airbus[2] and Wirecard[3] in the form of a collective redress.

Activities[edit]

The orgaanization focuses on advocating at the EU level on behalf of non-industry stakeholders to ensure the perspectives of consumers and end-users are considered by policymakers. The organization's research team analyses financial regulation and formulates policy recommendations. Its views are then communicated to policymakers by its advocacy team, who also cooperate with member organizations who share the same views, and to the wider public by its communication team.[4][5]

Member Organizations[edit]

As of May 2024, Better Finance represents 40 national member organizations across 25 countries, including 21 EU member states. Its membership is divided between full and associate members, with the latter not having voting rights [8].

As of May 2024, member organizations of Better Finance include:[6]

Financing[edit]

The organization has an annual budget of just under 1 million euros. In comparison, the financial industry's budget for 1,700 lobbyists in Brussels is at least 120 million euros, according to a study.[7] Better Finance is financed by membership fees, grants and donations and is partially funded by the European Commission. The organisation receives half a million euros a year from the EU Single Market Programme.[6]
