Bhagwat Murmu 'Thakur' (February 28, 1928–June 1998) was an esteemed social worker and writer, known for his significant contributions to society. He was born into the Santal family in the village of Bela, located in the Khera block of Jamui district in Bihar, India. His birthplace bears the postal address Matia, District Jamui, Bihar- 811312. Bhagwat Murmu's journey towards social work began during his college days in Ranchi, where he enrolled at St. Xavier's College. His interest in social welfare and community development grew, leading him to join the Sambhal Paharia Seva Mandal in Deoghar in 1952.[1][2][circular reference]

Bhagwat Murmu 'Thakur' dedicated himself to uplifting tribal communities, Dalits, backward classes, and other marginalised sections of society. His efforts in Bihar during the 1957 Assembly Elections gained significant attention, with the Indian National Congress opposing his candidature. Despite facing opposition, Bhagwat Murmu emerged victorious, becoming the representative voice of the tribal and backward classes in the Bihar Assembly for five consecutive years. He continued his legislative work from 1989 to 1991.[3][4]

Alongside his social work, Bhagwat Murmu 'Thakur' was also a prolific writer, penning poems, stories, and songs in Hindi, Santhali, and Bengali languages. He authored numerous books in the Devanagari script, many of which have been included in university curricula. Two of his songs are part of the syllabus for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. Notably, his book Dong Serengj (Dong Song) is available on Amazon in both Santhali and Hindi versions[. Some of his notable literary works include "Sohrai Sereng" (Sohrai Song), "Sisirjon Rang" (poetry collection), "Barubeda" (novel), "Mayajal" (story), "Santhali Education," "Hindi Santhali Kosh Dictionary," and "Kohima" (12 folktales) published by Naganeth Bhasha Parishad.[5][6][7]

Bhagwat Murmu 'Thakur' received numerous accolades for his remarkable achievements. He was the first tribal individual in India to be honoured with the Padma Shri, one of the country's highest civilian awards. On March 16, 1985, he was bestowed with the Pradashri Samman in recognition of his outstanding contributions to social work and literature.[8] Additionally, he received the Kavi Ran Samman from Nalanda University and was bestowed with the title of D. Litt. by the Indian Language Chair.

Bhagwat Murmu 'Thakur' dedicated his life to improving the lives of marginalised communities through social work and left a lasting legacy through his literary creations. His works continue to inspire and educate generations, making him an exemplary figure in the field of social work and literature.
