The Big Uglies are three unofficial mascots for Penn State's football team. The mascots are present at weekend Penn State football games and are manned by John, Paul and David Duda, known as the Duda brothers. During games, the Big Uglies walk throughout the stadium to cheer up fans at the games. Though they are not as known to other fans, the Big Uglies are well known by local Penn State fans who frequently attend games.[1]

The idea for the Big Uglies came to the Duda brothers when their mother picked up the iconic Big Ugly masks at a yard sale for the boys. These masks were originally a handout for a Hertz car promotion at the 1985 Orange Bowl. Originally, the brothers wore the masks with Penn State sweatshirts, but it evolved into full football uniforms.[2] The brothers got the names "Big Uglies" from sportscaster Keith Jackson.[3] In 2018, the brothers got in a dispute with Beaver Stadium after fans complained about them blocking the view of the football field. The brothers and Beaver Stadium eventually came to a compromise the same year.[4]
