Draft:Birgit Lohmann

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Birgit Lohmann is a German journalist. She founded the magazine designboom in 1999.[1]

Biography[edit]

Birgit Lohmann was born in Hamburg, Germany and studied industrial design in Florence, Italy.[1] She was an industrial designer and product development manager for 15 years, working for Italian architects and designers including Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, Bruno Munari, Enzo Mari and Renzo Piano. She co-founded the design website designboom in 1999 with her husband Massimo Mini, and moved to Bali to work from there.[2]

According to Lohmann, when designboom was launched, there were only two other websites (Core77 and DesignAddict.com) about design, and designboom was the only one that targeted a professional audience. In 2005, designboom started to organize events.[2]

In 2012, she was part of the jury for the first edition of the Lexus Design Award.[3]

Lohmann was the editor-in-chief of designboom from 1999 to 2023,[1] which she sold to the Architonic/ArchDaily group (owned by the Swiss media group NZZ) in January 2022.[4]

Awards[edit]

  • 2011: "Les 100 qui comptent" ("The 100 people who count") in the category "Les Maîtres du Web" ("Masters of the internet") by Architectural Digest[5]
