Brian Keith (22 September 1942) is a Scottish singer active since the 1960s. He has sung for Plastic Penny and The Congregation, and sung as Annas in the 1970 rock opera album musical Jesus Christ Superstar.

Career[edit]

Born Brian O’Shea in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the lead singer and main songwriter for Plastic Penny, under the name “Brian Keith”, as according to him, Brian O’Shea sounded “so damn Irish”.[1] Plastic Penny scored a hit in 1968 with a cover of “Everything I Am”. Their version of the song, originally by the Box Tops, went to number 6 in the UK.[2] Keith left Plastic Penny in late 1968, and the band itself split up in 1969.

In the 1970s, Keith re-entered the charts again as the lead singer for The Congregation, a group that was put together by songwriting duo Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway.[3] In 1971, they went to number 4 in the UK charts with the song Softly Whispering I Love You.[4] In America, they were labelled as The English Congregation to avoid confusion with an American group called The Congregation. After a few years, the group ended and are considered a one-hit wonder.

Keith sang the song This Jesus Must Die with Victor Brox on the 1970 Andrew Lloyd Webber album musical Jesus Christ Superstar, and also voiced Annas on the album.[5][1][6][7]

After The Congregation ended, Keith started work as a session musician. Currently, he works as an entertainer, and sings in a band in Las Vegas, where he lives.[1]

Personal details[edit]

Keith is of Irish descent,[1] and is often asked if he is Irish due to his surname, to which he replies that he is not and is Scottish, saying in an interview: “In that time (the 1960s) I’d do hundreds and hundreds of interviews a year and they’d always ask me where in Ireland I was from, and I’d say, “I’m not Irish, I’m from Scotland,” and they’d say, “Well how can you be from Scotland if your name is O’Shea?”[1]

His favourite singer is Ray Charles.[1]
