In 2019, Butlr emerged as a spinout from the MIT Media Lab, with operational offices in Silicon Valley and Boston. The company is driven by a mission to enhance environmental awareness within built spaces.[4][5]
During its initial seed funding round in 2020, Butlr secured $1.2 million, allocating resources to address challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic. The innovative thermal sensors were envisioned to assist in managing store queues and optimizing occupancy levels. Subsequently, in July 2021, a subsequent seed funding round raised $7.9 million, facilitating the continued development of the software.[6]
In July 2022, Butlr marked a significant milestone by securing $20 million in a Series A funding round. This achievement was followed by a strategic partnership announcement in November 2022. Butlr collaborated with Propstack, a real estate technology and data company, for occupancy sensing applications across commercial real estate projects in India. Additionally, a partnership was formed with View, a smart building technologies company.[7][8]
Cumulatively, the company has raised a total of $29.1 million in funding to date. Notably, the World Economic Forum recognized Butlr as one of the Technology Pioneers of 2022, acknowledging its innovative contributions to the technology landscape.[9]
