Charles Edwin Fairman supt.? authored a book on public art in the U.S. Capitol including biographiea of the artists.

He was friends with John Ross Key who he eulogized.[1]

Norwich University bestowed an honorary degree on him in 1940 noting: "CHARLES EDWIN Fairman a native of Dorset, Vermont, and life-long citizen of the town of Fairfax; graduate in law from Columbian University; for more than thirty years curator of Art in the United States Capitol, whose unfailing judgment and pains- taking care have contributed largely to the adornment of the nation's halls of legislation; author of authoritative treatises on works of art in federal buildings; in whom years have not diminished his love for his native state nor the keeness of his professional judgment. Norwich University confers upon you the well-merited honor of the degree of Doctor of Letters”.[2]
