Draft:Comforrt Care Home

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Comfort Care Homes provide care for individuals in their last few months of life, care that often is provided by family members but is not available for the patient. That can be due to elderly relatives or a lack of family able to provide the care. Comfort Care Homes are non-profit, usually depending completely on donations and fund raising events for their operating expenses. Volunteers are a key part of Comfort Care Homes. Comfort Care Homes are not medical hospices. They utilize Medicare hospice providers to provide medical services to their residents. Often they are very small, two beds is common. Isiah House in Rochester, NY, is believed to be the first Comfort Care Home in the country. It opened in 1987 and has served more than 500 residents. Rochester's Monroe County has 8 Comfort Care homes, probably more than any other county. Comfort Care Homes exist in many states, but not all. There are more than 40 in New York State. The Omega Network (www.omegahomenetwork.org/) is a membership organization which many but not all Comfort Care Homes participate in. There also is an association for New York homes, at www.nycomfortcare.org.
