The Community Advocate is an independently owned newspaper that covers the Central Massachusetts communities of Westborough, Shrewsbury, Marlborough, Northborough, Hudson, Southborough and Grafton. As of 2022 it is the highest circulation newspaper in those communities.[1] It publishes a mix of breaking news, municipal issues, human interest features and sports stories.

History[edit]

In 1974, Edmund Bagdon left his job at the Worcester-based newspaper The News Recorder[2]. Together with friend Arthur Surabian, he launched an advertising agency called Bagdon & Surabian Advertising. Together with their largest client, Julio’s Market[3], a regional supermarket chain based in Westborough, Massachusetts, they began publishing a shopper's guide named the Community Advertiser, which was anchored by the Julio's weekly grocery circular. Surabian later left the business, which continued under Bagdon's leadership until his death in February 1985.

His son David Bagdon, having worked at the publication since its inception took over as publisher at age 24. David Bagdon’s first objective was to revamp the format of the publication from a shopper's guide to a community newspaper featuring local editorial content. The redesigned publication was renamed the Community Advocate. With the closure of many local newspapers, it stands as one of the few remaining publications focused on community news reporting in Central Massachusetts. In addition to its print subscriber base, the Community Advocate also has a digital presence through its website.
