Dan Herman (born December 23, 1980) is the Chief Executive Officer of Intellectual Property Ontario, a notable Canadian authority on innovation policy and an independent filmmaker. He is also a professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at the University of Toronto.[1]

Career

Herman is the co-founder of the Centre for Digital Entrepreneurship and Economic Performance (DEEP Centre). He served as the Government of Canada's Executive Director of Innovation Policy at the Department of Innovation, Science and Economic Development from 2016 to 2018.[2] In 2019 Herman was named to the Government of Ontario's Expert Panel on Intellectual Property.[3] In 2021 Herman was appointed as the Government of Ontario's Special Advisor on the Establishment of a Centralized Resource Entity on Intellectual Property.[4]

Film and Television

Herman is the director and producer of Magnetic Cities, an 18 part documentary series on global innovation ecosystems. His earlier work includes "Made with Bravery: the story of Ukrainian Startup Resilience[5]" that tells the story of how the first six months of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine affected Ukraine's startup ecosystem.[6]

Education

Herman holds a PhD in Political Economy from the Balsillie School of International Affairs at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada. He is also a graduate of the London School of Economics and Politics.
