Dan Olson is a Canadian documentary film maker creating videos on the YouTube channel Folding Ideas.[2] Olson is most known for his viral documentary The Line Goes Up - The Problem With NFTs. Before his career as a freelance YouTuber he worked for "Channel Awesome" formerly known as "That Guy With The Glasses", an online video hosting platform created by Doug Walker.

YouTube History[edit]

Early YouTube Career[edit]

Olson would gain an initial following on YouTube by posting relatively short videos about topics that usually revolved around movies or television shows. These videos were generally focused around literary analysis of film.[3][4][5][6][7]

A Lukwarm Defense of 50 Shades[edit]

Olson would eventually release a longer three part series dissecting the 50 Shades Of Grey films to moderate success. Today the 50 Shades Of Grey videos have nearly 6 million collective views.

These series of videos were a comprehensive breakdown of the 50 Shades books, films and history of the production of the original story by E.L. James. This was Olson's first long project as well as his first virally popular work.[8]

Documentaries and Media Analysis[edit]

Olson has published a number of documentaries on his personal YouTube channel.[9] These are primarily what he is known for as of late 2023.

In Search of a Flat Earth[edit]

This is Olsons first documentary style video that wasn't focused on media analysis and critique. This documentary as the name suggests discusses the philosophy of the flat earth movement and it's similarities to the online conspiracy theory "Q Anon". The upload proved to be quite popular and currently sits at over 3.4 million views.[10]

World of Warcraft[edit]

Folding Ideas has produced a number of videos about World of Warcraft. World of Warcraft Classic and What We Left Behind covered differences between early and modern World of Warcraft and analyzed how players responded to the changing space of World of Warcraft. Olson paid particular attention to how player perception of quality and difficulty changes over time in MMO games.

'Why It's Rude to Suck at Warcraft' was Olsons largest video about Warcraft and covered the idea of intended play and skill within online MMOs. Olson and his colleagues paid particular mind to how intended play effects the online space among players.[11][12]

Contrapreneurs: The Mikkelsen Twins[edit]

Another long form video essay was Olson's video about the Mikkelsen twins. This video is more comedic in tone and focused on pointing out online get rich quick schemes, particularly those advertised by the Mikkelsen twins. The scheme in question involved writing throw away novels to sell on Amazon and was quite obviously a scam.[13]

Media Presence[edit]

He was mentioned by Time Magazine.[14]
