David Anthony Schmitt (born March 26, 1988)[1] is an American electronic music artist and DJ from Westminster, Colorado.[2] He is best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist and DJ for Breathe Carolina.[3][4]

Early life[edit]

Schmitt was born in Westminster, Colorado, United States on March 26, 1988. Schmitt began playing guitar at the age of eight. His dad played bass in various jazz and rock bands.[2] Schmitt attended Arvada High School.[5] He met and befriended former Breathe Carolina member Kyle Even at a battle of the bands competition.[6] At the age of 17, Schmitt played guitar for a band called As the Flood Waters Rose (later named The Autobiography) before forming Breathe Carolina.[7][1]

Career[edit]

Schmitt formed Breathe Carolina along with Kyle Even in 2007 recording songs on the music-creating software GarageBand. Schmitt had thought of the name from a dream he had in 9th grade,[8] about calming down a woman named Carolina.[9] The group has released five studio albums: It's Classy, Not Classic (2008), Hello Fascination (2009), Hell Is What You Make It (2011), Savages (2014) and Dead: The Album (2019). In June 2011, Breathe Carolina released their hit single, "Blackout". The song peaked at No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the UK Indie Singles chart.[10][11] In April 2014, Breathe Carolina released their fourth studio album, Savages, selling 14,000 copies in its first week and topping the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.[12]

Outside of Breathe Carolina, Schmitt has written and collaborated with numerous musicians and bands. Schmitt was featured in a single titled, "Make Her Wait" by The Broadway in 2012. Schmitt was also featured in a song by It Boys called, "Start the Party" and made a cameo appearance in the music video for the song.[13]

In 2010, Schmitt was featured in a song titled, "I Live High" by American rapper, Travis Mills. In 2012, Schmitt contributed to Go Radio's second studio album, Close the Distance. In 2014, Schmitt performed on stage with Linkin Park at the Vans Warped Tour performing their song "New Divide".[14]

Personal life[edit]

In 2012, Schmitt along with Even teamed up with Blush and started their own clothing line.[15] In 2019, Schmitt married his girlfriend Olivia Virden.[16]
