Davis Bothe is an American author, consultant, and educator known for his contributions to quality improvement methodologies.

Education[edit]

Bothe received his undergraduate degree in applied math and physics in 1973 and an MBA in 1976, both from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.[1] During this period, he also served as an instructor for mathematics and business statistics courses at the university.

Career[edit]

Bothe commenced his industrial career in 1973 at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, working as a systems analyst. Subsequently, in 1976, he joined General Motors as a statistician, playing a pivotal role in their warranty data analysis department. Over the years, he held various significant roles within General Motors, contributing to product quality updates and leading quality improvement initiatives.

In 1985, Bothe co-founded the International Quality Institute, a prominent private consulting firm specializing in quality and productivity improvement with a global clientele. He assumed the role of the organization's president in 1999.

Academic career[edit]

Bothe served as an adjunct professor of statistics at Eastern Michigan University (1987-1989) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (1989-present), teaching courses such as Statistical Process Control (SPC), Statistical Problem Solving, Industrial Statistics, and Six Sigma.

Since 2001, he has certified more than 600 Black Belts and over 700 Green Belts in Six Sigma methodologies.[1]

Bothe has made contributions to the literature on quality improvement. He has published articles in various quality magazines and technical journals in the U.S. and internationally. His books include "Industrial Problem Solving" (1989), "Measuring Process Capability" (1997), "Reducing Process Variation" (2002), "Six Sigma in the Office," and his latest work, "Controlling Process Variation" (2020).

Bothe is recognized as the "Father of Short-run SPC."[1] In 1987, he authored the U.S. Army standard for applying SPC to short production runs. His 1989 book, "Industrial Problem Solving," featuring his trademarked DOT STAR problem-solving strategy, has sold over 100,000 copies.

In 1997, McGraw-Hill published his 900-page reference handbook for capability studies, "Measuring Process Capability,"

Bothe is a Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and has served on the National Education Board. He is a certified Reliability Engineer, Quality Engineer, and an IQI-certified Six Sigma Master Black Belt.

International Impact[edit]

Bothe has conducted seminars and consulted with industrial companies in various countries, including Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, England, Ireland, Wales, Germany, Belgium, Australia, China, India, Brazil, Qatar, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Canada.
