Deng Kuo-ching (Chinese: 鄧國清; pinyin: Deng Guo-qing; Wade–Giles: Teng Kuo-chin; 1931- October 2020) was a Taiwanese watercolor artist. He graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at the Fu Hsing Kang College in 1956 and was an artist who inherited the traditional English method of watercolor painting. He placed special emphasis on creating shifting layers with the use of highly translucent colors and mostly depicted countryside sceneries and natural landscapes.

Life[edit]

Born in Shaoyang City of Hunan Province, China in 1931, Deng also went by the art name, Koching (戈青). He was inspired by Chinese artist, Chen Baiyi, when he was a junior high school student in Shaoyang, and established his interest and foundation for painting by painting en plein air in many places to depict natural landscapes. He then followed the National Government of the Republic of China and relocated to Taiwan. In order to keep pursuing his artistic interest, he began studying at the Department of Fine Arts at the Fu Hsing Kang College (now the Applied Arts Department of the National Defense University) and graduated in 1956.[1][2][3]

Deng Kuo-ching was mentored by many influential art figures while he was in school, including Lin Kegong (1901-1992), Liu Shi (1910-1970), Liang Ding-ming (1898-1959), Liang Jung-ming (1906-1982), Liang You-ming (1906-1984), and others. Profoundly influenced by the English method of watercolor painting, most of Deng’s works are depictions of rural sceneries and natural landscapes.[1][2][3]

Deng began teaching at the Department of Fine Arts at the Fu Hsing Kang College in 1961 and was a dedicated art educator. He also served as Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at the Fu Hsing Kang College and taught at the Department of Fine Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts. He was also a jury member of the Ministry of Education Literature and Arts Award[AL1] ; an honorary consultant of the Chinese Asia-Pacific Watercolor Association; and a consultant of the Taiwan International Watercolor Association.[1][2][3]

Art Style[edit]

Deng Kuo-chin was an art painter under Taiwan’s “political warfare system.”[4] He specialized in the English method with techniques of overlapping and patching and highlighted creating layers using translucent colors in order to create richly layered and natural effects that show the colors and luster of light and translucent luminosity.[3][5]He also specialized in using delicate brushwork to express the unique landscapes and culture of Taiwan’s rural areas and often depicted natural sceneries in Taiwan, including mountains, forests, wilderness, streams, region of rivers and lakes, village houses and cottages. Using techniques to represent nature, he was dedicated to “blending the spirit of the East with techniques of the West,” in order to create a natural world where “there’s poetry in the paintings and paintings in the poems.[1][3][5]
