Deutscher Freiheitssender 904 was an East German (DDR) propaganda radio station, that broadcast at the height of the Cold War.

History[edit]

It broadcast from 17 August 1956 until 30 September 1971. The station was set up in response to a ban on the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). East Germany was ruled by the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

The radio station was named after the Deutscher Freiheitssender 29,8, which had broadcast in Spain in 1937.

It began broadcasting from Berlin, but moved to Bestensee, at Dahme-Spreewald, on the outskirts of Berlin,in the mid-1960s, where it stayed until 1971.

Presenters were chosen with West German accents.

Content[edit]

Coded messages were read out to appeal to possible communists in West Germany.

West German radio did not play much popular music in the 1960s.

The political content of the broadcasts was not having much effect. People were listening largely for the popular music, which was well-liked by West Germans.

Transmission[edit]

The reach of the broadcast went into the north and west of West Germany, but not the south. It was costing 2 million Deutsche marks per year. By 1969 there were only three 30-minute broadcasts per day.
