Draft:District 1-5A (LHSAA)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

District 1-5A in the LHSAA is a high school sports league in the Greater Shreveport area.

History[edit]

Since 2000, District 1-5A has consisted of teams from North Louisiana, especially the Shreveport area. From 2001-2004, the Shreveport-Bossier area was represented by two districts in Class 5A. However, during the 2005-07 classification cycle, all of North Louisiana was represented by one district. The LHSAA passed a rule in 2005 designed to limit schools with low enrollments playing "up" in class, believing that football powers such as John Curtis Christian School and Evangel Christian Academy were using 4A and 5A status, respectively, to attract students to their schools. Curtis was dropped to 2A in 2005, and Evangel to 1A before moving up to 2A in 2007. This affected District 1-5A by forcing Evangel out of 5A. However, at its January 2012 convention, the LHSAA approved a new proposal by the principal of Jesuit which allowed schools to play up from their enrollment-based classification by one class, effective with the 2013-14 school year. In the following classification cycle, Evangel played up to Class 3A. Effective with the 2015-16 school year, schools could play up to any classification. Therefore, Evangel made the decision to play up to Class 5A and return to District 1-5A. Evangel left District 1-5A after the 2018-19 school year. However, for the 2024-26 classification, Evangel made the decision to return to Class 5A and were placed in District 1-5A.
