About[edit]
Dollmaker (stylised as dollmaker) is a Greek South African indie musician. First active in 2018 in her hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa, she is currently based in Athens, Greece where she works under the slogan, "wholehearted audiolovesnark"[1].
Named after the online dress-up games (see Doll maker (Internet)) that proliferated in the early 2000s and were popular with girls growing up at the time[1], dollmaker's sound combines organic elements reminiscent of 70s folk music, including layered vocals and acoustic guitar, with lo-fi MIDI associated with video game music.
Lyrical themes typically include heartbreak, idealisation, romance, home, Deification, Weltschmerz and homesickness.
History[edit]
2018-2020: Love Addiction 2.5[edit]
Dollmaker's first single, "Jesus of Cyrildene", was released on the 23rd of October 2018 under her then working name Carlo Marks. This formed part of Love Addiction 2.5, a never-completed collection of songs produced alone on GarageBand during her years as an undergraduate at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Continuing in 2019 as dollmaker, she released a second track, "The Loneliness", on the 21st of June.
The collection's third track, "No Prodigal Son", was released on the 13th of December 2019. Its artwork features a digital collage of John William Waterhouse's Circe Invidiosa, modified using Blingee.[2]
This was followed by the single "Double Dates", which included a music video, on the 26th of December 2019.
The final track on the now-abandoned Love Addiction 2.5 was an acoustic song titled "Conveniences", released on the 20th of February 2020 and subsequently taken down from all streaming services except dollmaker's Bandcamp.
2020-2022: Hiatus[edit]
Beginning in March 2020, dollmaker entered a hiatus. This included a period of relocation to Valencia, Spain.
2022-present:[edit]
Upon moving to Athens, Greece, dollmaker has resumed work and released several short clips featuring snippets of previously-unheard tracks to platforms including Facebook and Instagram.
