dr hab. Beata Gessel-Kalinowska vel Kalisz Polish International arbitrator,[1] expert in the field of merger and acquisition transactions, private equity/venture capital, and commercial law. Founder & Senior Partner of the GESSEL[2] law firm since 1993. Member of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC)[3] International Court of Arbitration in Paris[4] (2015-2021). President of the Lewiatan Arbitration Court[5] (2011-2017), in 2017 she became the Honorary President of this court.

  • Legal studies at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Warsaw[6] (1989).
  • Awarded a doctoral degree in social sciences, specializing in legal sciences at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw ("Legal Nature of Statements and Assurances in the Sale of Shares in a Limited Liability Company (in the Light of the Principle of Freedom of Contract)," Wolters Kluwer 2010) (2009).
  • Attained the post-doctoral degree (habilitation) in social sciences, specializing in legal sciences at the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw ("The Legal, Real, and Converged Interest in Declaratory Relief," Kluwer Law International 2021) (2021).

Arbitration experience[edit]

Beata Gessel, holding a Doctor of Law degree and serving as a legal advisor, completed her legal studies at the University of Warsaw in 1989. She earned her doctoral degree in legal sciences from the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw in 2009, with a focus on the legal aspects of statements and assurances in the sale of shares in a limited liability company, published by WoltersKluwer in 2010.

Specializing in arbitration, mergers and acquisitions, private equity/venture capital, and commercial law, Beata Gessel is the founder and Senior Partner of the GESSEL Law Firm.

Throughout her professional journey, Beata Gessel actively participated in over 100 arbitration proceedings, encompassing both national and international cases. These proceedings followed diverse rules such as ICC, SCC, UNCITRAL, FCC, IAA, Lewiatan, and KIG, covering areas like mergers and acquisitions, construction law (including FIDIC regulations), and commercial contracts.

Since 2015, she has been a member of the International Court of Arbitration ICC. From 2011 to 2017, she served as the President of the Lewiatan Arbitration Court, and in 2017, she was honored with the title of Honorary President. Beata Gessel also holds the position of Chairwoman of the Audit Committee at the Polish Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (PSIK).

Apart from her professional commitments, Beata Gessel is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration at the Stefan Cardinal Wyszyński University, where she lectures on international commercial arbitration, mergers and acquisitions, and Legal English.

She is a prolific author and editor, contributing to numerous publications in the fields of mergers and acquisitions and economic arbitration.
