Equiratings is a sport data analysis company that provides performance metrics, ratings and content specifically for the equestrian events industry.
Background[edit]
The company was started by childhood friends, attorney Diarmuid Byrne and Irish national olympic equestrian silver medal event rider, Sam Watson in 2015.[1]
The company produces the EquiRatings Eventing and Jumping Podcasts, hosted by Nicole Brown, and the EquiRatings Quality Index (EQRI) which uses data analysis to determine the likelihood of a rider-horse combination completing a cross-country course.[2][3] The eventing podcast produces over 200 episodes yearly while the jumping podcast produces approximately 50 episodes a year.[4][5]
This information is used by event organizers, Olympic teams and governing bodies, including the US Eventing Association, to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.[6][7] The company became the official metrics provider for Equestrian Australia, the national organization of Australia.[8]
EquiRatings teamed with SAP to design a statistical model that forecasts the results of major eventing competitions before and during the event. Pre-competition and post each phase, it simulates the competition 10,000 times, and updates its projected leaderboard and the estimated probability of victory, podium or top 10 for each pair.[9]
EquiRatings Quality Index (EQRI)[edit]
The EquiRatings Quality Index (EQRI) was introduced in 2016 and helps manage the risk of horses and riders across equestrian events around the world. EquiRatings creates a profile for each horse in competition and then assigns it a rating based on numerical value between 0 - 1. This number rating is used to assess the chances of a horse completing a cross country event without faulting. Eventing officials can then can set a minimum score to qualify for competitions.[10][11][12][13]
Horse Form Index (HFI)[edit]
The Horse Form Index (HFI) is a rating system that was developed with FEI for rider and owners to determine competition worthiness. Horses are assigned a grade from A++ to E depending on the horses previous event performances. The rating is accompanied by rating from Excellent for those qualified, to Significantly Low, signaling the horse is unsuitable for the competition level of the event.[14]

EquiRatings Horse of the Year[edit]
Each year votes are cast for the EquiRatings Horse of the Year award, also known as EROHTY. The award was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
