Fawaz Jaleel (Hindi: फवाज जलील, born 26th February 1992) is an Indian author and journalist who writes columns in The Times Of India[1]. He has written three short stories and a novel.[2] His first book is Nobody Likes An Outsider.[3] In the past, Fawaz Jaleel has been a consultant to the Government of India[4] and Prime Minister's Office.[5]

Early life[edit]

Fawaz hails from Vilakkudy, Kollam in the state of Kerala . His father, Jaleel Kutty[6] works with a private company in Bahrain.[7] He completed his schooling in Bahrain from Asian School and The New Indian School.[8] He did his graduation from Madras Christian College and post graduation from Azim Premji University.[9]

Novels[edit]

Fawaz Jaleel's first novel is Nobody Likes An Outsider.[10] The novel is inspired by recent events in India. It is the first book of the Yohan Tytler series.[11] It also features sub-inspectors Ila Qureshi and Sukumar Azhagu.[12] The book is set in Bihar.[13] The book[14] is published by Kalamos Literary Services.[15] The book has been optioned by a production house for a digital adaptation.[16] The author's second novel, Insiders Versus Outsiders is a sequel to the first book and is a crime thriller set in Mumbai, Delhi, and Assam.[17] The author's third novel, based in Calcutta is set to release in 2023.[18]

Critical Reception[edit]

Fawaz Jaleel's book opened to positive reviews from critics. The Sunday Guardian stated that "In the end, the book flips the reader’s imagination by suddenly exposing a completely different side of the narrative it got the readers hooked on to".[22] The New Indian Express called it 'A stellar debut novel with a raw flavour of Indian politics and murder investigation.[23] The book highlights the issue of casteism in Islam.[24] The book was a commercial success[25]. India Today reviewed the second novel, Insiders versus Outsiders and summarised it as " In short, Fawaz Jaleel sends Yohan Tytler and team to uncharted territories, chasing a herculean case, and yet the investigators deliver, and how. It is definitely a good read."[26]

Cinematic Adaptation[edit]

The book rights of Nobody Likes An Outsider was acquired by Mumbai-based Grandiose Production[27] to be converted into a motion picture. The cinematic project is currently in the pre-production stage.[28] Audible by Amazon acquired the book rights of the novel.[29]

Short Stories[edit]

Fawaz Jaleel has written three short stories - Alternate Identities, From The Land of Palaces, and The Legend of Birbal's Bull.[30] His previous short stories were in thriller, romance, and magic realism genres.[31]
