Freeman Sparks Bowley was a First Lieutenant in the Union Army during the American Civil War and a fireman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was captured. He commanded "Colored Troops". Later in life he wrote newspaper accounts of his experiences for a veterans publication that were gathered into a children's book, A Boy's Lieutenant in 1906 after his death. Some of his stories had similarities to earlier published accounts by Ambrose Bierce.[1]

He prepared and read statements before the California commandery of the Military order of the loyal legion of the United States in 1889 and 1890 on the Petersburg Mine (Battle of the Crater) and Confederate Military Prisons.[2] His account "The Battle of the Mine" was published in 1870.[3]

Luis Emilio's A Brave Black Regiment was published in 1894.[1]

Albert Jesse Bowley Sr. was his son.

His book was published as A boy lieutenant : memoirs of Freeman S. Bowley, 30th United States Colored Troops officer in 1996 and as Honor in command : Lt. Freeman S. Bowley's Civil War service in the 30th United States Colored Infantry in 2006 with an introduction by historian Keith Wilson.

What was his publication A Dark Night on Picket? One of his articles?
