Gabriel Casey was an Irish sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Lispole and played with Kerry at all levels in the 1970s and 1980s.[1]
Personal Life[edit]
He was a son of Kerry inter-county footballer of the 1930s and 1940s Bill Casey. He was also a cousin of Brian Mullins who played with Dublin in the 1970s and 1980s.[2]
His brothers, Gearóid and Riobard, also played with Kerry at all levels.[3]
Club[edit]
At club level, he lined out with Lispole and West Kerry.
With Lispole, he won eight West Kerry Senior Football Championship titles, as well as a Kerry Junior Championship title.[3]
With West Kerry he was a two time County Senior Championship winner in 1984[4] as captain and again in 1985. [5]
Minor[edit]
He lined out with Kerry at minor level first in 1975. He was Right Half Back as Kerry overcame Cork in the Munster final. After a semi-final win over Roscommon, Casey and his teammates qualified for the All-Ireland final. He picked up a winners medal after a 1–10 to 0–04 over Tyrone.[6]
He was underage again in 1976. After an opening round win over New York, he lined out in another Munster final. This time Cork took the title.[7]
Under 21[edit]
After his displays at minor level, Casey joined the U21 team.
His first appearance was in the 1977 Munster final with Cork. A 2–08 to 0–08 win saw him pick up a Munster winners medal. After a semi-final win over Leitrim, Kerry qualified for the All-Ireland final. Casey was again at Right Half Back against Down. A 1–11 to 1–05 win seen him pick up an All-Ireland U21 winners medal.[8]
He picked up his second Munster medal in 1978 after another final win over Cork. A semi-final win over Louth seen him line out in his second All-Ireland final.In a close game with Roscommon Casey fell short of second All-Ireland medal in a 1–09 to 1–08 loss.[9]
In his last year of U21 Kerry lost out to Cork in the Quarter-final.[10]
Junior[edit]
He joined the Kerry Junior team in 1983. He picked up a Munster winners medal after a final win over Cork. A semi-final win over Galway seen Kerry into the All-Ireland Home final with Dublin. The sides ended level and Casey missed the replay. He was however back for the final with Yorkshire in Tralee. A 0–15 to 0–02 win seen Casey picked up an All-Ireland winners medal.[11]
He made another appearance at Junior level in 1988, but was on the losing side to Tipperary.[12]
Senior[edit]
Despite his success at underage level he only made two appearances at senior level. Both coming during the 1979 National League.[13]
