The Gas Emergency Service of the UK is a 'Make Safe' Service that operates 24 hours a day, all year round for gas leaks and Carbon Monoxide detection.[1] or symptoms [2]. The service prioritises protecting life and property, while maintaining gas supply for consumers.
History[edit]
The Gas emergency Phone number was set up in 1996 when the Gas Safety (management) Regulations were implemented [3]. Gas suppliers are legally required to have the 0800 111 999 number on customer bills for gas emergencies.
In the early 2020's the 4 Main Gas distribution Networks were established and Cadent became the first point of contact for Gas Emergencies and Carbon Monoxide leaks.
The Northern Ireland Gas Emergency Service number is 0800 001 002[4][5]
Issues attended[edit]
Gas Emergency Service may attend a property with police support, as gas engineers have the right to enter a property in line with the Gas Safety (Rights of Entry) Regulations of 1996.[6] The Emergency Service can provide support if the gas is not working due to a fault with a gas meter by sending an engineer, but ultimately gas meters are the responsibility of the utility companies.[7] Emergency Services can confirm a supply of gas by sending an engineer if there is gas getting to the meter, and may be able to advise customers what to tell the gas supplier to correct the issue. The Gas Emergency Service does not normally replace Gas Meters as this is the Gas Supplier's equipment.

Calls are received by a Cadent facility and if the incident is not in a Cadent area, it is passed on to the other applicable Gas Distribution Networks (GDN):[8]

Engineers[edit]
Gas engineers sent by the Emergency Service respond to emergency situations. Depending on the situation they may offer advice, replacement detectors, or help coordinate with a gas supplier, Gas Safe Registered Installer (GSRI), or other authority.
