Giovio, a noble family originally from the Isola Comacina, later settled in Como, known since the 9th century. For centuries it possessed strong influence in the Como area, and had the honour of depicting the insignia of the Holy Roman Empire, the Medici and Charles V in its coat of arms; the last direct descendant, Maria De Szeth Giovio, died in 1927.
