Dr. Bharat was a Fellow and Area Convenor of Water Resources Division of The Energy and Resources Institute, Presidential Scholar at George Mason UniversityScientist in CSIR-Central Institute of Mining & Fuel Research, Dhanbad, Jharkhand and Assistant Professor in Chemistry in MBB College, Agartala, Tripura.
Dr. Bharat holds a Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry (Water Quality). She is an alumni of Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, BITS (Pilani), LIT (Laxminarayan Institute of Technology), Nagpur, George Mason University. [3]

Dr. Girija, started her journey through Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CIMFR), Nagpur, India as Scientist (Jun 1989 to Dec 1997 and Jan 2003 to April 2007). Further she joined MBB College, Agartala, Tripura , India as Assistant Professor in Chemistry (Dec 1997 to Dec 2002)
During Aug 2008 to Jun 2009 as Presidential Scholar and Apr 2007 to Jul 2008 as Researcher, she worked for Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, George Mason University
She served a long period to The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) as Fellow and Area Convener, Water Resource Policy & Management from 2009 to 2015.
Currently she is working for World Bank as a Consultant, Water and Sanitation and Managing Director in MU Gamma Consultants Private Limited[4]

- 'Golden Pinnacle Award' on behalf of Mu Gamma Consultants by Indian Achievers Forum in Dubai in April 2023[8][9]
- 'Save the Environment (STE) Annual Awards – Water' bestowed upon Dr Girija Bharat in January 2022 organised by STE, Hindu College, Delhi University, in association with CSIR- NEERI, RSC London- North India Section and ESDA, Delhi[10]
- Glory of India Award was presented to Dr Girija Bharat in July 2021 by Indian Achievers Forum in recognition of her professional achievement and contribution to nation building.[11]
