Girijananda Chowdhury University is a private university[4] in Assam, established in 2022 through The Girijananda Chowdhury University, Assam, Act, 2022 created under Assam Private Universities Act 2007.[5]

Girijananda Chowdhury University was established by the Act No. XLVII of 2022 of the Assam Government as a State Private University under the aegis of Shrimanta Shankar Academy Society registered under the Societies Registration Act 1886.[6] It was established in 2006 as Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, an institute offering degree level technical courses in the State of Assam in the non-government sector established by Shrimanta Shankar Academy (SSA) Society.[7][failed verification] Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science was also established at Guwahati in 2007, which was the first self-financing private Pharmacy Institute in north eastern region offering Bachelor of Pharmacy. In 2012, Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Management and Technology, Tezpur was established and it was the first institution established under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode in north eastern region of India. In 2020 tezpur campus of Girijananda Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Science was also established. In 2022, all the sister organizations of Girijananda Chowdhury group of Institutes comes under Girijananda Chowdhury University.[8][9]

The university offers PhD in various subjects. Admissions for pursuing PhD. at Girijananda Chowdhury University is planned to take place through the Girijananda Chowdhury University-Research Entrance Test (GCU-RET).[10] A minimum of 50% marks is to be obtained by examinees in the entrance test for being eligible to be called for interview. The university also offers diploma and certificates in Welding, Design and 3-D printing, Embedded system and IoT, Lab. Animal handleing and Experimental Techniques and Computer Hardware and Networking.
