The Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI), is the largest global nonprofit standard certification board dedicated to innovation and innovation management with 16,000 members in more than 119 countries as of 2024.[1][2]

History[edit]

The Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) was founded in 2009 by a consortium of chief innovation officers, innovation executives, academics, and consultants. It is the largest certifying body and professional organization with the mission to democratize innovation worldwide using a tested framework[3]. As a preeminent thought leader, GIMI has the largest network, offering certifications and programs that employ an effective methodology to jumpstart innovation, develop capabilities, and yield tangible results through tools, methods, framework, and processes that go beyond ISO 56002 guidance making GIMI an ISO+ organization.

The Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) was created to unleash the creativity of individuals, teams, SMEs, universities, corporates and equip them with the innovation tools to solve any complex problems. They have certified thousands of individuals throughout the world with over 18,000 individual certifications, 1,300 organizational certifications, and formed alliances with more than 500 partners and governments worldwide. GIMI collaborates with partners across the globe, aiming to establish innovation as a professional business discipline integrated into academic institutions, professional organizations, corporate and government academies. GIMI also authored and published numerous books, owns a blog of innovation articles, the International Journal of Innovation and Science, and the GIMI Think Tank Platform.[4][5]

The Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI) is governed by a diverse and accomplished Board of Directors, which includes thought leaders such as Brett Trusko and Ronald Jonash. As well as, an executive team composed of innovation professionals who manage their respective divisions and work in conjunction with the Board of Advisors. The team is led by the Chief Executive Officer, Hitendra Patel[6], and COO & Partnership Director, Erila Haska.

In 2023, GIMI merged with International Association of Innovation Professionals (IAOIP), a membership association sharing a similar mission and actively involved in the development of innovation ISO standards. The combined organization leverages the strengths of IAOIP’s unique ISO Tag and membership model and GIMI’s strength in governments, Fortune 500 companies, and universities to offer innovative opportunities to network and provide solutions to leaders around the world. Together, they provide a forum for global innovation thought-leadership, events, and a comprehensive suite of innovation management certification programs and training courses that help organizations around the world drive excellence in measurable returns on investment.

GIMI has many certificates around innovation to build capabilities as an individual, team and organizations as well other products helping organizations jumpstart innovation and generate results.These products and services falls into four main categories:

1. Certifications[edit]

The GIM Institute offers multiple professional certification programs in innovation management, catering to individuals and organizations across all stages of innovation maturity, spanning from fundamental  to continuous learning certifications. For starters, GIMI offers the Innovation Catalyst Certification serving as the first step to start the innovation management journey. Moving beyond, GIMI provides advanced certifications such as the Certified Innovation Professional (CIP) program, aimed at professionals aspiring to tackle real-world challenges and usher in breakthrough innovations, and the Certified Chief Innovation Officer (CCIO) program tailored for those steering the innovation agenda within organizations.[5][7]

In its commitment to continuous learning, the Global Innovation Management Institute offers specialized certifications such as GIMI impact program[8], designed to empower high school students with an innovative mindset to solve social challenges, the certified future foresight professional & leader program providing methodological tools for horizon scanning, creative thinking, idea generation, and trend analysis, and  the certified management consultant (MCI) program to impart the essential elements of business consulting to professionals and students. GIMI also offers Design Thinking Course and Certification to support organizations in their concept development, prototyping, and experimentation processes.

2. Training and Tools[edit]

The Global Innovation Management Institute provides masterclass sessions for most of its courses and various types of training for organizations and professionals like the EPIC program or Innovation Coaching. Moreover, GIMI has created tools to help assess individuals and organizations innovation maturity, readiness, and know-how and a Career Center to connect talents with organizations[9]. For individuals, GIMI created the Innovation Potential Assessment (IPA), a framework built to assess an individual’s mindset and mastery of knowledge and tools to innovate. For organizations, there is the Organizational Innovation Assessment, to evaluate and assess organization’s innovation strategy, capacity, discipline and performance. Additionally, GIMI possesses ISO Standards, tools and framework for organizations to implement, maintain and improve innovation management systems.

3. Memberships[edit]

GIMI has 13,000 individual, academic and organization members and offers four types of memberships professional, student, corporate, and organizational, each tailored to provide active leadership, lifelong learning, career development, job openings, networking, innovation branding development, talents upskilling, and organizational capabilities building for businesses and governments.[2]

4. Thought Leadership[edit]

The Global Innovation Management Institute has published an extensive library of innovation and business books including the Innovation Management Body of Knowledge (IMBOK) Volume 1,2,&3. The Global Innovation Science Handbook (GISH) Volume 1, and other books such as Connectivate, Healthnovate, Greenovate, Ideation techniques, Game Changers, and Squiggly lines.

The Global Innovation Management institute (GIMI),  has also created GIMI Blog of Innovation articles, and GIMI Think Tank Webinar, a common space where thought leaders and partners share and discuss a variety of topics on innovation, energy, strategy, and technology among others. GIMI also owns the International Journal of Innovation and Science, with more than 1000+ articles.[10]

The Global Innovation Management Institute (GIMI), has 500+ partners in 29 countries, and a network of 8 Training Providers, Universities, and Corporations to amplify its mission to democratize innovation around the world.

  • Certified Training Partners (CTP): The Certified Training Providers (CTPs) are training providers or organizations that GIMI has approved to offer training/certifications in Innovation Management to individuals, companies, governments.[5][11]
  • Certified University Partner (CUP): Certified University Partners (CUPs)  are universities that GIMI  has approved to offer innovative courses in bachelor, master, and executive education programs. These universities could offer other GIMI programs targeting students. GIM Institute has partnered with a wide network of universities around the world to deliver innovation courses, create innovative strategies and generate growth ideas and skills.[2]
