Gresham Life Assurance Society Limited is an English life insurance company founded in London in 1848.[1] [2] and incorporated on 28th July 1893[3].
History[edit]
The company's London offices, built by John Jenkins Cole, were located at 37 Old Jewry, not far from the heart of the City of London and near Gresham Street.
It operated a branch in France beginning in 1854[4]: the company purchased the building located 30 rue de Provence, bearing the number 34 rue Lafayette.
The company has established numerous branches in the United Kingdom, Europe and other continents. In the Kingdom of Sardinia, the branch was created by Royal Decree of 28 September 1855. After the unification of Italy the headquarters moved from Turin to Florence, at via dei Tavolini 10.
Also in 1855 the company established its Belgian branch in Brussels. In 1900, it acquired the building in Place Royale[5] and had it renovated in the Art Nouveau style between 1900 and 1903 by the Belgian architect Léon Govaerts.
From 1904 to 1906, the company had its foreign office built in Budapest, again in the Art Nouveau style: this building still exists today and bears the name of Gresham Palace (or Gresham-palota).
It is now a dormant company[6]. Its offices are located at Windsor House, Ironmasters Way, Telford, Shropshire[7]
