The Half Double Methodology

The Half Double project methodology, developed in Denmark, represents an agile and practical approach to project management. Crafted and validated through insights from experienced and successful project managers, the methodology was designed to provide project managers with a tool that better suited the challenges they faced in the real-world scenarios. The mission was to elevate the success rate of projects while accelerating the development of new products and services.

Mission and Impact Rooted in Denmark, the Half Double methodology stems from the imperative need to find a project methodology tailored to the realities confronted by project managers. With a mission to increase project success rates, particularly in the context of developing new products and services, the methodology has proven its potential to significantly impact the Danish project landscape. Aarhus University has been involved since the beginning to document and evaluate the performance of the methodology in a multitude of organizations. This kind of documentation of a project methodology's impact is second to none. T

Simplicity at its Core - 3 Core Elements, 9 Methods, and 9 Tools The simplicity at the core of the Half Double methodology aligns with its Danish origins, emphasizing three core elements and non-negotiable principles that have been shaped by the unique input of experienced project managers. The local translation feature allows the methodology to be adapted to specific projects and local cultures, adding a layer of flexibility reflective of the diverse realities it aims to address.

1.2 Core Elements in the Half Double Methodology

1.2.1 Impact The Half Double methodology's shift from the traditional project management triple constraint to a focus on impact resonates with the practical experiences of Danish project managers. Stakeholder satisfaction takes precedence, reflecting the understanding that projects are not mere delivery machines but endeavours aimed at leaving a lasting impact on the world.

Principle 1: Stakeholder satisfaction is the ultimate success criterion.

1.2.2 Flow In line with the commitment to efficiency, the Half Double methodology prioritizes the progression of project impact over resource optimization. Visual planning and the establishment of a "project heartbeat" underscore the methodology's dedication to ensuring high stakeholder involvement and satisfaction.

Principle 2: High intensity and frequent interaction.

1.2.3 Leadership The shift from management to leadership in the Half Double methodology mirrors a Nordic working culture, emphasizing trust over compliance and embracing changes as opportunities. Active involvement of key executives as project owners aligns with the Danish tradition of collaborative leadership, recognizing that projects are fundamentally comprised of people.

Principle 3: Must embrace uncertainty and make the project happen.

1.2.4 Local Translation Acknowledging that different contexts and cultures demand different approaches to reach success, Half Double encourages local translation to adapt the methodology to the specific needs, systems, and cultural nuances of each organization, ensuring that it remains a practical and relevant tool for project managers navigating unique realities.

Training and Certifications[edit]

There are three levels of Half Double Certifications that can be achieved: Foundation, Practitioner and Master. The Half Double certifications are accredited by APMG. Training from Accredited Training Organizations ensures that project managers are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to implement the methodology effectively. While the Foundation certification only requires a test, the Practitioner and Master level are only obtained based on an assignment and interview analyzing and evaluating the candidate’s application of the Half Double Methodology in an own project. The Half Double Handbook gives an overview of the thoughts behind and the principles of the Half Double Methodology.

In March 2020, the Half Double Institute was founded as a not-for-profit institute with the mission to facilitate information about the Half Double methodology and expand the use of the methodology.
