Draft:Hitler's Rant

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Hitler's Rant" is an internet meme utilizing a movie clip from the movie Downfall (2004), during which Adolf Hitler (portrayed by Bruno Ganz) falls into an uncontrolled rage, and curses the Senior Officers of Germany for disobeying his orders.

Origin[edit]

The meme stems from a scene from the movie Downfall, which is a reenactment of an actual event that took place in Hitler's bunker during the Battle of Berlin.[1] In the scene, Hitler is informed by Alfred Jodl (portrayed by Christian Redl) that Felix Steiner had not carried out the attack he ordered to relieve Berlin from surrounding Red Army troops. This blatant dismissal of Hitler's orders drove him to the point of a screaming, tearful rage. During the scene, he declares that his generals are the "scum of the German people", and he should have executed all of his generals, like that of Joseph Stalin during the Great Purge.

Due to the clip being entirely in German, and usually not understood by the people who parody it, this clip has been parodied and remixed countless times in non-German speaking countries, with false subtitles being inserted for comedic effect. The purpose of these memes is usually to convey widespread discontent, by having Hitler "react" to certain things, such as a change in price of Amazon Prime.[2] An innumerable amount of these videos can be found on YouTube.

In popular culture[edit]

The meme was referenced in the animated sitcom, The Cleveland Show, in Season 4, Episode 8, Wide World of Cleveland Show, when an internet meme has Cleveland playing Hitler in the scene.
