Inclusive Books for Children (IBC) is a registered charitable organisation based in the UK, aimed at promoting diversity and inclusivity in children's literature.[1]

Various initiatives run by IBC include a book-review website[1] and an inclusive book awards[2] (see also below).

The IBC website hosts over 800 inclusive books for young children.[3] Their team of book reviewers, with backgrounds in education, libraries, academia and book publishing, provide the book reviews for the site.[3]

History[edit]

Inclusive Books for Children was established in November 2022 by Sarah and Marcus Satha.[4]

After a period of research and development[5], the Inclusive Books for Children website launched in September 2023, at an industry event held at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE), whose 'Reflecting Realities' research report IBC sponsored this year[6].

Inclusive Books for Children Awards[edit]

The Inclusive Books for Children Awards were also launched by the charity in September 2023, to showcase inclusive children's books published in the UK.[1]

For their inaugural award, a £30,000 prize fund was shared between the authors and illustrators of the winning books in each of the following categories:

  • Baby & Toddler books (ages 1-3)
  • Picture Books (ages 3-7)
  • Children's Fiction (ages 5-9)[7]

The 2024 awards were judged by author A. M. Dassu; educator, speaker and author Jeffrey Boakye; influencer and LGBTQ+ and disability rights advocate Jessica Kellgren-Fozard; BBC TV and Magic FM presenter Sonali Shah; CLPE representative and teacher Farrah Serroukh; and author, illustrator and comedian Aoife Dooley.[8]

The inaugural awards ceremony was held at the Barbican Centre on 28 February 2024.
