The Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials (I-FIM)[1] is a Singapore-based research organization set up in 2021[2], within the National University of Singapore (NUS). I-FIM is the sixth research centre of excellence (RCE) in Singapore, and the fourth RCE hosted at NUS.[3] It boasts academic partnerships with Nanyang Technological University and a range of leading global research institutions in the field of materials science.
Helmed by two co-directors, the Nobel-Prize-winning materials scientist Konstantin Novoselov and the physicist Antonio Castro Neto, hosting multi-disciplinary scientists such as Guillermo Bazan and the Singaporean scientist and entrepreneur Lim Chwee Teck, the goal of the institute is to create a library of designer materials – and develop systematic ways to describe them mathematically – as the building blocks of functional intelligent materials. Using these building blocks, the researchers at I-FIM develop a rulebook for predicting intelligent materials behaviour, structure and synthesis pathways. Using machine learning and robotics, the functional intelligent materials are designed and synthesised for smart applications such as neuromorphic computers, to machine vision, smart membranes, smart catalysts, or artificial tissues.[4]
In particular, the initial theoretical goals for I-FIM include the creation of a library of designer materials – as well as standardised recipes of their synthesis – and the development of their minimal meaningful mathematical description (reduced representations), as the building blocks of functional intelligent materials. The key areas of application of the functional intelligent materials are electronics, bio and healthcare, energy and coatings.
