The International Union of Marine Insurance, IUMI for short, is the global umbrella organisation for transport insurers and the oldest cross-border association in the insurance industry.

The purpose is to represent the interests of transport insurers and reinsurers. Members of IUMI are the national transport insurance associations or the transport insurance divisions of the national insurance associations.

History[edit]

With the continuing development of international trade, the need for insurance policies with internationally standardized conditions increased in the middle of the 19th century. In January 1874, insurance companies of Austria, Germany, Russia and Sweden[5] founded the forerunner of the IUMI called "Internationaler Transport - Versicherungs - Verband" in Berlin, which became the "International Union of Marine Insurance" in the course of the internationalization of the members. Since IUMI was long regarded as a German organization, activities largely came to a standstill during the World Wars until it was restarted in Switzerland in 1946. Since then, individual insurance companies have no longer been members of IUMI, but rather their national associations[6]. Finally, in 2012, the headquarters were relocated from Zurich to Hamburg[7], back to the country in which IUMI was founded.
