JWords is a producer, composer, and DJ based in New York City, noted for her work in the electronic hip hop genre as well as their use of modular synthesis and analog instrumentation. [1]She is known for being one half of H31R (pronounced heir/air) along with Brooklyn rapper/vocalist maassai. In addition to live performances of instrumental music and beats using analog electronics, synthesizers and drum machines; JWords is known for her DJ mixes, regularly appearing on NYC’s The Lot Radio and hosting artists such as Semiratruth, BSTFRND, Dilemma, a2z, and maassai.

Early Life[edit]

JWords, originally from Union City, New Jersey, has a musical upbringing that encompasses hip-hop, 90s and early 2000s rap. She gravitated towards Pharcyde and MF Doom as a teenager. Growing up in a Dominican household, she was surrounded with dembow, reggaeton, salsa, bachata, and club music. JWords started her journey in live performance during her high school years when she joined a psychedelic rock band. [2]While she developed her skills on the piano and keys, she quickly became obsessed with synthesizers and electronics. This eclectic mix of musical influences informs the foundation of her own music which blends genres of hip hop and electronic music.

Career[edit]

Getting her start as a beat maker on the SP but feeling limited by its range for dynamic live performance, she took years to develop a live instrumentation setup. As of 2017, she has since incorporated modular synths in combination with the SP, OP-1, and teenage engineering’s Pocket Operators into her engaging solo performances, and has garnered sponsorships from teenage engineering and Roland among others.

Her collaboration with maassai in H31R further pushes the bounds of genre within hip hop and electronic music. Both JWords and maassai were influenced by a variety of musical genres during their upbringing, which played a significant role in shaping their individual musical styles.[3]Their collaboration began in 2017 when they met while performing together and quickly formed a strong friendship. [4]

JWords and maassai embarked on a creative journey to bridge the gap between hip-hop and electronic music, starting with collaborative tracks like "My Name Jack?" and "Toxic Behavior." During the pandemic, they had the opportunity to refine their sound and record their debut album, 've·loc·i·ty,' released in 2020. This album received critical acclaim for its innovative fusion of hip-hop and electronic elements, combined with influences from jazz, juke, Jersey club, and boom bap.

The duo's creative synergy led them to create their next album, 'HeadSpace,' which explores personal growth and introspection. JWords and maassai's collaboration has garnered recognition in the music industry, and their highly anticipated album 'HeadSpace' was released on November 17th through the record label Big Dada.[5]
