Jean Paul Makhlouf (born October 18, 1986),[1] also known as JP Makhlouf is an American electronic music artist and producer from Roseland, New Jersey. He is best known as the singer and DJ of American electronic music band Cash Cash.[2]

Early life[edit]

Makhlouf was born in Roseland, New Jersey on October 18, 1986. He met and befriended Cash Cash member Samuel Frish in elementary school.[3] He attended West Essex High School and graduated from the school in 2004.[4] Makhlouf attended college while working for animal shelters before getting signed to their first record label.[5]

Career[edit]

Makhlouf first began playing in a band under the name The Consequence in 2002 alongside longtime friend Samuel Frisch.[6] In 2007, Makhlouf and Frisch regrouped as "Cash Cash" with Anthony Villacari and Alex Makhlouf joining the band. The group has released five studio albums: Take It to the Floor (2008), Love or Lust (2011), The Beat Goes On (2012), Blood, Sweat & 3 Years (2016) and Say It Like You Feel It (2021). Their fourth studio album Blood, Sweat & 3 Years peaked at number 125 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum in South Korea in 2017.[7]

Mahklouf has also done work on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise releasing two songs: "Speak With Your Heart" and "Reach For the Stars".[8][9] In 2011, Makhlouf performed the two songs at the Tokyo Game Show and Sonic Boom, respectively. He also worked on many remixes for both the console/PC version and Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations.

Makhlouf produced Big Time Rush's debut studio album, BTR and Dot Dot Curve's album, I'm Still Here. Makhlouf also provided backing vocals and additional guitar on I'm Still Here. Makhlouf has done programming and engineering on the album Crazy World by Boys Like Girls. In 2019, Makhlouf was credited as the composer, editor and sound designer on the album Hurts 2B Human by P!nk.[10]

Makhlouf co-wrote and produced the song "Live for the Night" by Krewella in 2013.[11] Makhlouf mastered and engineered Clean Bandit's song "Symphony" in 2017.[10]

Personal life[edit]

Makhlouf has a younger brother, Alex Makhlouf who is also apart of the group Cash Cash.[2] In 2022, Makhlouf became engaged with longtime girlfriend Elise Raye.[12]

Tyga Incident[edit]

On March 11, 2016, Makhlouf was physically assaulted by Tyga's team.[13] The altercation stemmed from Tyga delaying his scheduled set, which conflicted with the time Cash Cash was set to perform. It was reported that the altercation started out with a verbal argument that led Tyga's DJ to allegedly throw a punch.[14] Makhlouf suffered a concussion, injured kidney, alongside bruises to his head and body from the incident.[15]
