Jeremy Manongdo (born 1986/1987),[1] known professionally as Jeremy Passion, is a Filipino-American singer-songwriter, musician and producer from San Francisco, California. One of the first Asian Americans to go viral on YouTube,[2] he is best known for uploading videos of cover and original songs, including his song "Lemonade", onto his channel and has collaborated with other artists in his videos including AJ Rafael and Tori Kelly.

His original music has been described as R&B and soul,[2] and he has released two studio albums and two extended plays (EPs).

Life and career[edit]

Early life[edit]

Passion was born and raised in San Francisco, California.[3] He taught himself how to play the piano at the age of four, started songwriting at the age of fifteen[2] and taught himself the guitar shortly after.[3][4] In 2003, he uploaded his song "Lemonade" to music service SoundClick,[1][5] and started his YouTube channel in 2006.[6]

Passion worked as a volunteer in Ghana in 2007 and initiated The Empty Suitcase Project in Tanzania, which helped children discover their creative pursuits.[3]

2011–2015: For More Than a Feeling and Pixelated[edit]

In late 2011, Passion independently released his first studio album, For More Than a Feeling, which was produced by Filipino-American artist Jesse Barrera and funded on Kickstarter. The $20,000 that were raised also supported a European tour. The album, described as a mix of blues, soul and R&B,[7] reached #4 on the iTunes R&B/Soul Charts.[1] He also released a concept EP, Pixelated, which reached #9 and explores long-distance relationships.[3]

In 2014, he went on his first Southeast Asia tour.[8]

2016–2019: II and Thankful[edit]

In 2016, he released "We Can", co-produced with Grammy-nominated producer TuneDaRula. The song was inspired by the idea of "opening up a whole new world" to another person.[9]

In 2018, Passion released his second studio album, II, featuring "We Can".

In 2019, he released a collaborative EP, Thankful, with Filipino artist Gabe Bondoc and Filipina-American artist Melissa Polinar.

2020–present: Lemon Lesson, The Modern Nostalgia Tour and Parallels tour[edit]

In 2020, Passion collaborated with Polinar for the rerelease of her 2010 song, "Never Change". The rerelease featured on an Instagram story posted by BTS member Jungkook two years later in 2022.[10]

In 2021, he released a cover single of Rex Allen's "There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow", the theme song to two Disney theme park attractions. The single was released as part of the company's "Reimagine Tomorrow" project to promote inclusion.[11]

In 2022, he co-authored and released a children's book, Lemon Lesson, with Filipino author Randy De Jesus, releasing the song "It's All Good" along with the book. 10% of the book's sales was donated to help build wells in Kenya, assisted by CMF International.[12]

In April 2023, Passion, along with Bondoc, Jesse Barrera and Filipino-American musician Albert Posis, embarked on the 7-date Modern Nostalgia Tour, touring the west coast of the US.[13] That same year, he collaborated with Canadian singer Jon Vinyl on the song "Thinkin Bout You".[14]

Beginning in April 2024, Passion will embark on the Parallels tour across Australia and the Philippines, accompanied by Bondoc.[15]

YouTube channel[edit]

Passion created his YouTube channel "passionsf" in 2006, where he uploads videos performing original and cover songs. His acoustic covers of R&B songs such as "So Sick" and "Cater 2 U" made him one of the first Asian Americans to go viral on the platform.[2] As of March 2024, his channel has almost 87 million views, and his most viewed video, a 2013 cover of Brandy's "Brokenhearted" with Tori Kelly, has been viewed almost 16 million times.[16]
