Early life and education[edit]
Joel was born as the fourth child to Dr. Vernon Scandrett and his wife Ruth Scandrett. He was raised in the Free Methodist Church and grew up in a very devout household. Joel attended Wheaton College for his undergraduate degree and his first master's degree, followed by his Master of Divinity from Gordon–Conwell Theological Seminary in Massachusetts.
Ministry career[edit]
Joel was accepted into a doctoral program at Drew University and began attending All Angels' Church in Manhattan where he was confirmed in September of 1997. He then started the ordination process with the Episcopal Diocese of New York. After moving to Boston for his wife's medical residency, Joel faced pushback from the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts as they required him to return to seminary for a year and serve for five years within the diocese.
Joel then decided to pursue ordination through the American Anglican Council and was ordained as a deacon in 2007 in the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh by Bishop Robert Duncan at Trinity Cathedral. He was ordained a priest by Bishop Sandy Greene of the Anglican Mission in the Americas at Church of the Resurrection (Wheaton, Illinois) in 2008.
Joel is currently an Assisting Priest at Church of the Ascension (Pittsburgh).
Academic career[edit]
Joel began teaching at Trinity School for Ministry in 2012, first teaching half-time and serving in an administrative role at the Robert E. Webber Center, Webber having been one of his professors while at Wheaton College.
Personal life[edit]
Joel and his first wife, Sheryl Nystrom, were married in May of 1986. She and their unborn child were killed in a car accident in July of 1988. He and his current wife, Karen Glasser, were married in 2000. Karen is an Associate Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
